Why Waterless Skincare Became the Foundation of Vemel

Why Waterless Skincare Became the Foundation of Vemel

When Vemel launched in 2019, waterless skincare was still an unfamiliar concept to many people.

Our decision to formulate differently was never about suggesting that water itself is bad. It came from a much simpler question:

If an ingredient does not need to be there, why include it?

For Vemel founder and formulator Agi Miel, that question became central to the way every product was developed.

Agi’s interest in ingredient integrity grew from deeply personal experiences. Years living with severe endometriosis, watching her son struggle with eczema and later supporting her mother through breast cancer made her increasingly conscious of the products used every day and the importance of understanding what was actually inside them.

Those experiences did not lead Agi to look for miracle skincare.

They led her in the opposite direction.

She wanted simpler, more purposeful formulations designed to support skin over the long term rather than continually overwhelm it.

Why waterless?

Water is the main ingredient in many conventional creams and lotions. Once water is introduced, a suitable preservation system is also needed to keep the formula safe and stable. By removing added water, we can devote more of the formulation to purposeful botanical ingredients, skin-supportive ingredients and targeted actives rather than dilution.

Agi wanted Vemel to take a different approach.

Instead of using conventional added water as the foundation of a formula, Vemel concentrates its products around ingredients selected because they have a purpose for the skin: organic botanical oils, plant extracts, ferments, skin-supportive lipids, algae biotechnology and clinically studied actives.

The result is skincare designed to be concentrated, purposeful and used thoughtfully rather than excessively.

Waterless formulation has since become one of Vemel’s defining principles.

It also sits naturally alongside our wider philosophy: fewer unnecessary steps, fewer products where possible, and formulations created to work with the skin rather than constantly challenge it.

Organic botanicals meet modern biotechnology

Vemel was never intended to be traditional botanical skincare alone.

From the beginning, Agi wanted to combine the intelligence of nature with advances in modern skin science.

Today our formulas bring together carefully selected organic botanicals with biotechnology-derived ingredients, algae actives, ferments, plant stem cells and skin-supportive lipids.

For us, the two belong together.

Organic ingredients provide extraordinary natural fatty acids, antioxidants and phytonutrients, while modern biotechnology allows us to work with increasingly targeted ingredients for concerns such as hydration, collagen support, skin resilience, the microbiome and visible signs of ageing.

This is where Vemel sits: Organic skincare, elevated by biotechnology and concentrated through waterless formulation.

Created with sensitive skin in mind

Our approach has also evolved around one central belief: visible results should not have to come at the expense of long-term skin comfort.

Skin can become more vulnerable through hormonal change, environmental exposure, over-exfoliation and increasingly aggressive routines.

Menopausal skin in particular may experience increased dryness, sensitivity and changes in resilience.

Rather than continually asking skin to tolerate more, Vemel focuses on supporting what healthy-looking skin depends upon: hydration, essential lipids, microbiome balance, barrier function and resilience.

That is why many of our formulas are particularly suited to sensitive, reactive, mature and hormonally changing skin.

We call this a barrier-first approach.

The aim is not to chase every skincare trend. It is to help skin remain comfortable, balanced and resilient over time.

No added perfume. No masking what is inside.

Transparency has always mattered to us.

Vemel does not use added parfum or synthetic perfume to make a formula smell more appealing. Where a product has a natural aroma, it comes from the ingredients used within the formulation itself.

We also believe customers should be able to understand what they are buying.

That is why ingredient integrity, clear labelling and honest communication remain central to the brand.

We do not believe skincare needs vague “clean” claims or fear-based marketing.

We would rather explain what we use, why we use it and what it is intended to do.

Sustainability starts with formulation

Our decision to formulate waterless was also connected to a bigger question about consumption.

Sustainability is not simply about putting a recyclable symbol on a box.

It means thinking about how much we formulate, how products are used, the materials we choose and whether increasingly complicated routines are really necessary.

Vemel products are designed to be concentrated and, wherever possible, multifunctional.

We manufacture in small batches in the UK and continue to minimise unnecessary packaging and plastic throughout the brand.

But perhaps one of the most sustainable things skincare can encourage is simply using less, more intelligently.

From an idea in 2019 to an award-winning skincare philosophy

What began as Agi’s search for a more considered approach to skincare has grown into an independently recognised British skincare brand, with Vemel products receiving more than 70 beauty and wellness awards.

Those awards matter to us because they provide independent recognition of something we have believed from the beginning:

Skincare can be effective without becoming unnecessarily aggressive.

It can combine organic ingredients with sophisticated biotechnology.

It can support visible results while respecting sensitive skin.

And it does not need to begin with a jar largely filled with water.

Today, Vemel remains guided by the same principle that inspired its launch:

Organic. Waterless. Purposeful. Skin-first.

Because sometimes saying no to what you do not need allows you to put far more emphasis on what your skin actually does.
